Great Ideas: Week 5

Tuesday, April 28th, 2020

We’re not recommending this for everyone, but what a great conversation starter and fund raiser started by the Rev. Mary Bohall, senior pastor at First United Methodist Church in Mendota, Ill.! She’s helped raise hundreds of dollars for her community (and her husband got an interesting haircut out of the deal). You’ll enjoy this story!

We’ve seen this idea in several places: your church or organization can create a virtual food drive through Amazon. People in your congregation who want to help can donate non-perishable food and personal hygiene items through an Amazon Wish List instead of the traditional way of going to the grocery store and then stopping by your food pantry for dropoff. After you’ve created your wish list, people who want to donate can go to your Amazon page and add items to their cart for purchase. Common food pantry items to request include peanut butter, jelly, canned soup, canned pasta, canned fruit and cereal, and hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet paper and cleaning supplies.
